VM Porcelain Functional Build-up Technique
VITA porcelains have always been known for their vitality, shade fidelity and accuracy, and of course, consistent quality. An additional benefit of the VITA VM series of porcelains is the very small particle size, which results in minimal shrinkage during firing. Because of this tremendous advantage, the ceramist no longer needs to routinely incorporate the traditional method of over-building, extensive condensing, and time-wasting grinding to finally reach a point where the restoration is ready to be glazed. Often times, a restoration has to be ground back and enamel reapplied after essentially being ground away due to over-building, resulting in an unnecessary 2nd bake, an increase in labor and material costs, and a reduction in profit.
The Functional Build-up Technique, developed by Bill Mrazek B.S., CDT is an accurate, yet highly efficient and predictable approach to building porcelain that reduces labor and material costs per unit, which ultimately increases the profit per unit. The technique incorporates all of the functional excursive movements, anatomy, contours, contacts, and the elimination of excursive interferences in the build-up. Combining the minimal shrinkage characteristics of VM7, VM9, and VM13 with the Functional Build-up Technique creates a perfect marriage of materials and technique. The average build-up time per unit using 2 – 4 powders is 14 minutes for posterior restorations, and just a few minutes more for anteriors. The average total adjustment (grinding) time is 3 – 4 minutes prior to glazing. Since the porcelain is built ‘true to contour’, multiple powder build-ups and layering can be routinely accomplished without fear of effects and characterizations being removed during grinding, as frequently happens with the traditional over-building technique.
